STINK. STANK. STUNK. GRACE.

What a great thought as Christmas is coming!

STINK. STANK. STUNK. GRACE.

Christmas can get hectic. Parties, presents, travel, family … stress. Before you know it, you’ve turned into a seasick crocodile. A bad banana. As cuddly as a cactus.

Or maybe it’s the people around you. Your Grinch of an aunt or Scrooge of a boss or your brother with a heart that’s two sizes small.

But the great thing about Christmas is that it’s a great time to show grace to all those toadstool sandwiches in our lives.  And, it’s a time when all of us have received some grace ourselves.

So this year, ask yourself who you’d give a second chance to. Who you NEED to give a second chance to. Trade in the 39 and 1/2 foot pole, wash the garlic out of your soul, and embrace a life of second chances!

Respond and share links to your own platform below.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Read this today and thought how can I help students produce fruit..any thoughts?
One of the most intriguing miracles in the New Testament is Jesus cursing the barren fig tree. The other miracles give life. This one takes it away. Why? Because the fig tree isn’t producing any fruit. It’s wasting space. Are there any barren fig trees in your life?http://www.markbatterson.com/

Reaching people

What a great way to live our lives
IF we are truly going to be followers of Him then we’ve GOT to not just know what He said but also we must do what He did…which means walk out of our own comfort zones and do whatever it takes to reach people far from God. We can’t just “live a great life” and hope they see it…we’ve got to speak the words!!! Perry noble

GUEST POST: 12 Things You Should Say to a Guy Who Struggles with Porn

What a great post!

GUEST POST: 12 Things You Should Say to a Guy Who Struggles with Porn

A lot of what I read about sexual sin in the Christian realm sounds strikingly similar to what I hear in the secular world. I’ve heard youth pastors say again and again things like:

  • “Don’t have pre-marital sex, because you might get a disease.”
  • “Don’t masturbate, because you’ll have erectile dysfunction when you’re married.”
  • “Don’t look at porn, because it will make your wife seem ugly.”

As fine as these reasons are, the reason they sound just like the world’s advice is simply this: they have nothing to do with the gospel. So, I’d like to offer 12 gospel-centered things you should tell a guy who is struggling with lust:

1.) You Have a New Master. How many times have we justified using our bodies however we want with this line: It’s mine? News flash, Homie: if you are bought by the blood of Christ, your body does NOT belong to you. It belongs to Him. When you were saved, you didn’t buy Jesus. Jesus bought you. That means he dictates how your body should and shouldn’t be used.

You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.” -1 Corinthians 6:19b-20

2.) You Have a New Label. When we form a habit, we begin to identify ourselves by that habit. If we golf, we’re a golfer. If we lust, we’re a luster. So many times when temptation comes our way, Satan says: “Remember? You’re a luster. This is what you do. You’re a pervert.” If you have put your trust in Jesus Christ, that’s not true. Yes, you were a “luster” and a pervert. But when you accepted Christ, he gave you a new nature. You are no longer a luster or a pervert, but a son of God who has power to overcome Satan.

You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. Colossians 3:7-10

4.) You Have a New Spirit Within You. So many guys I’ve talked to have just given up on their ability to overcome sexual temptation. “I don’t know what to do anymore. It’s just impossible to overcome lust!” Really? That’s not what God says. If you’ve been trapped in the lie that you can’t overcome sexual temptation, it’s time to begin believing more from God. If you’ve trusted Jesus for salvation, God has implanted the power of his own Spirit inside of you. To say “I can’t” is to say, “He can’t”. To say “I can” is to believe Him.

“…God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.”-1 Corinthians 10:13

4.) You Have a New Race to Run. So many times, guys return to their lust because they’re not replacing it with anything. If a guy lays down the sin that so easily entangles, but doesn’t run the race set before him, guess what? He’s going to get bored and pick his sin up again. Singleness isn’t about sitting around and playing Cheeto-stained video games until we get married. It’s not about having extra free time to pursue our own desires and hobbies and aims. Singleness is about ministry. It’s about pursuing God and others with a greater intensity than will ever be possible in your life again after marriage. So, maybe the reason you’re falling back into temptation again and again isn’t because you aren’t trying hard enough. Maybe it’s because you’re not replacing you’re bad habits with the exciting, life altering race God has for you as a single person.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. -Hebrews 12:1

5.) You Have a New Reason to Love your Wife. (Yes, I know high-school guys do not have wives. But in all likelihood, they will.) Did you know that there is a way for you to practice spiritual leadership of your wife right now? Did you know that there is a very practical, daily activity you can do to assist your future wife in her day-to-day life today? Did you know that you can begin growing in your love for her right now? You guessed it: pray for her. You may not know who she is, what color hair she’ll have, or how the heck you’re finally going to meet her. But when you do, you won’t regret one minute you spent on your knees for her. And guess what? As you grow in your love for her, you will also grow in your hate for the perversion of your relationship. Lust just seems dumb when you’re in love.

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. -Ephesians 5:25-27

6.) You Have a New Appetite. Part of the reason you fall into lust is this: you are thirsty. You are hungry. You are looking for beauty. Let me tell you something: you’re not going to find what you’re looking for under a girl’s clothes. You can look over and over again, but you’re still going to want more and more, because no woman can satisfy the longing you have to see God in his Holy Temple. That is the beauty you are looking for. Here’s the good news: you can experience this beauty in part, now, by dwelling on God’s word. God’s word is how he communicates all of his beautiful characteristics to you day after day. Are you leaving yourself spiritually hungry? Have you hidden God’s word in your heart that you might not sin against him? If not, you’ll try to itch that scratch with lust again and again.

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4:4

7.) You Have a New Story. At the very root of lust is an attitude of ingratitude. If you spent your time thinking about what God has given you, you wouldn’t be dwelling on what God has not given you. This applies to all areas of life; whenever you set your mind on things you don’t have, you are lusting. If a genie gave you one wish, what would it be? Would it be marriage? It would be wiser to ask for gratitude. Even when you are married, there is temptation to be ungrateful, and to look elsewhere for satisfaction. You are training yourself right now for marriage; will you be grateful for and loving towards your future wife, or will you be ungrateful, lustful for other women? You choose now. Make a list of temporal blessings (temporary things) and eternal blessings (God’s attributes and works on your behalf) and make sure to give God thanks all day long for the good he has placed in your life.

“Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.” – Ephesians 5:4

8.) You Have A New Savior. The reason why so many modern church-goers are tempted to reject the notion of hell is simply this: we do not understand the incredible offense of sin against God. Sin does indeed deserve eternal punishment and separation from God, and when we sin, there is an eternal price to be paid. If we have placed our trust in Jesus for salvation, that price is paid on the cross. However, every time we sin, we add to the penalty Jesus paid on that cross. Sin isn’t free; it’s costly; eternally costly; costly for our sweet savior, led like a lamb to the slaughter of our salvation.

Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. Colossians 3:5-6

9.) You Have A New Joy. The difference between joy and temporary pleasure is the difference between water and lemonade. Lemonade tastes good for a moment, but ultimately it only makes you thirstier. Water, on the other hand, satisfies. When dealing with temptation, you must ask yourself: is it better for me to gain a few seconds of pleasure and lose my joy? Trespassing against God always strips us of our joy. So, we must choose: do we want temporary excitement, or eternal joy? And here’s the good news: when we choose joy, God allows us to experience pleasure as well, in His time and in His way. But when we pursue pleasure over joy by pursing it outside of God’s boundaries, we lose both.

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:33

10.) You Have a New Hope. I’m not going to lie, I think a lot of Christian books on purity are full of a deceptive philosophy. They teach that if you have sex now, or lust now, you will ruin sex for your marriage. True as that may be, that’s not really the point of overcoming lust. If the sole reason you are trying to overcome temptation is to have better sex later, you’re going to fail. Why? Because you’re still worshiping sex, and when temptation comes your way, you’re going to take it. Don’t set your eyes on marriage; don’t set your eyes on sex. Set your eyes on intimacy with Christ. This is why you are working out your salvation with fear and trembling; so that you may be spotless, blameless and pleasing to God when you stand before him to give an account for your life.

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. -Colossians 3:2

11.) You Have a New Trust. As a guy who once struggled with pornography, I have a secret for you: all sex is the same. There’s nothing out there that will ever be more satisfying than the plan God has for your sexuality within the confines of marriage. So many times we act like our parents, Adam and Eve, and we look for something outside of God’s boundaries, because we don’t trust that He has given us the best. And what happened when Adam and Eve eat the fruit? Nothing. It looked good, but they gained nothing. They lost everything. So, when Satan tempts you with the big shiny apple of temptation, call him out. He’s like the Wizard of Oz, and he’ll keep you thinking he has something great and powerful for you, so long as it’s hidden behind a curtain. Then when you open the curtain, guess what? Nothing’s there. Trust God that nothing is behind that curtain; He has the best for you in mind, not Satan.

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise,  she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.  Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. –Genesis 3:6-7

12.) You Have a New Freedom. As Christians, we differ from every other religion. We don’t try to earn our way to God; we don’t try to work for his approval. In fact, we obey because he’s approved of us. As Christians, we are not thankful because we obey; we obey because we are thankful. We don’t obey to earn God’s favor; we obey because God has already cleared our slates on the cross. Jesus was crushed for our iniquities, and the more we realize his grace for us, the more thankful we become, and the more obedient our hearts are to Him. So no matter what; whether you’re doing well in the fight for purity, or your head is hanging in shame, always, always, always rest in the good news of the gospel. Always be thankful for Christ’s sacrifice for you on the cross, because only obedience that flows from gratitude frees us to truly obey God from the heart. And obedience from the heart is the only way to please God our heavenly father and Jesus Christ, to whose name every knee will bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth. Hallelujah; praise God!

“Dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense–Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.” 1 John 2:1

In other words, the reason to avoid lust can be summed up in one word: Jesus.

What’s the Shelf Life of Your Sermons?

What a great article about making your sermons last longer.

What’s the Shelf Life of Your Sermons?

Your teaching team may spend many hours and countless meetings creating all of the elements surrounding your sermon message. It may include a series video intro, print graphics, on-screen visual package, coordinated backgrounds for worship music slides, shooting and editing the intro skit video and even a physical set design. That’s on top of the research and study to prepare the message itself!

Once the sermon has been delivered at all of your services and all of your campuses, what happens to it? If you’re like most churches, the sermon probably spends seven days on the “last week’s sermon” box on your website, and hopefully shows up in your podcast for a few weeks. Then, it begins to die a slow death, slipping gradually into the annals of other great sermons that time forgot.

Why Sermons Get Lost and Forgotten

Here are some reasons why sermons typically carry a very short shelf life:

  • Churches think of sermons as live events, rather than study and spiritual growth tools.
  • Most church websites post sermons based on chronology, so the oldest ones get lost.
  • Podcast feeds typically deliver only the most recent “episodes.”
  • Many people only get sermons via podcast, and may never visit the website itself.
  • Many churches still offer sermons only via tape or CD, which are becoming increasingly irrelevant in an MP3 world.
  • Sermons are for Sunday. There is rarely a connection to any other activity or curriculum being shared in other corners of the church (children, youth, small groups, etc.).

5 Ideas to Get More Value from Your Sermon Archives

With a few tweaks to your strategy, though, sermons can become a useful resource for years to come.

  1. Make sermons available on your website. If you’re not offering sermons via web delivery, do it! If you are lacking equipment or manpower, consider a pocket digital voice recorder like this.
  2. Make sermons free. Give away your sermon downloads. Some churches will charge for a download of a sermon, while attending their church on Sunday is free of charge. We wrote more extensively about this on our blog.
  3. Promote the popular messages. Publish a “most viewed” sermon list each month or each quarter. This implies that you have tools allowing you to measure these stats (which, by the way, are a very valuable thing to have as a feedback mechanism for your teaching team).
  4. Offer tools to filter results. Allow searching/browsing by Scripture, topic, speaker or title (not just by date).
  5. Extend the conversation. Develop curriculum for your small groups, to discuss the deeper points of a sermon. Consider packaging these with DVDs of your sermons so that if a group isn’t ready to tackle a series now, they can obtain it from the church later.

There are plenty more ways to add value to your sermons! We’re hosting a brand new webinar on this topic next week, and we’d love to have you join us. You can register for free.

Be Careful Who You’re Counting Out

What a great word for us as student pastors!

Be Careful Who You’re Counting Out

The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.
-Matthew 14:21

Jesus didn’t feed 5,000 people with five loaves and two fish.
He fed a crowd of people that numbered 5,000-besides women and children.
But in those days, the women and children typically weren’t part of the headcount. Therefore, we typically refer to this incident as the feeding of the 5,000. Actually, it was more like 20,000, at the very least.

With this in mind, isn’t it remarkable that the ingredients for the miracle came from a little boy?

Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”
-John 6:8-9

God fed the multitude through the meager resources of a child who wasn’t even included in the original count.

God likes the unlikely.
When He looks for someone to use, He often looks for the under looked.
He calls for the youngest son, who wasn’t even worth bringing in from the sheep field, from the perspective of his father and older brothers.

Be careful before you count someone out.
They might be the channel of your miracle.
And if you’ve been counted out lately, don’t worry.
God often hides His provision in places where no one else would know to look for them.
Man looks at the outward appearance. But God looks at the heart…

2 Lies the Devil Loves to Tell God’s Children

This is what I needed today!

2 Lies the Devil Loves to Tell God’s Children

The devil is a liar. That’s all he is, and he’s good at what he does.

He’ll tell you whatever he needs to tell you in order to trip you up, or keep you down.

And he’ll change up the delivery of his message depending on what you’re going through.
So when you’re suffering a trial, the devil will whisper a message of hopelessness to you.
He’ll say something like:
This will never end.

On the other hand, when you’re in a season of blessing, the devil will try to shake your confidence by telling you the exact opposite:
This will never last.

But trials do end. Joy comes in the morning. There is a mountain of victory on the other side of your valley.

And blessings do last. Even though seasons change, God’s favor is forever. He who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it.

Don’t let the devil twist the truth.
Catch him in his lies, and stand on what God says.

The Will Of God

This is such a good post!!!

You Already Know The Will of God

I love Thessalonians 5:16-18.  Some of the shortest verses in the Bible, but they pack a punch: “Rejoice always. Pray continually.  Give thanks in all circumstances.”

We get so bent out of shape trying to figure out the will of God because we think the will of God is circumstantial.  It’s primarily attitudinal.  It’s not about your circumstances. It’s about how you handle those circumstances. It’s not aboutchanging your circumstances. It’s aboutchanging you!  God is less concerned about what you do and where you go.  He’s more concerned about who you’re becoming.

You already know the will of Godrejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances. If you are doing those things you are doing the will of God.

CHANGING THE WORLD, ONE KID AT A TIME

I love hearing stories of how God is using students

CHANGING THE WORLD, ONE KID AT A TIME

Several years ago, we set a goal in our youth ministry to sponsor one kid on every continent that we could sponsor a kid on as a youth ministry.   We're not there yet, but so far, our Encounter High School Ministry sponsors 5 kids or organizations monthly by asking students to bring $1 a week to our weekend services to help us sponsor them.  Here's who we've been sponsoring for quite some time now:
  1. A boy named Marvin in El Salvador through World Vision
  2. A girl named Ruby in India through World Vision
  3. A girl named Luyando in Zambia through World Vision
  4. A boy named Hector in Tecate, Mexico through HIS Ministries.
  5. An orphanage called Welcome Home where I adopted 2 kids from in Uganda
We are still very much committed to trying to help our students wrap their heads around the larger needs in the world through education and action for those who live in extreme poverty and this month, we did 2 things to add some more fuel to this fire:

WE VISITED HECTOR.

We made a day trip to Mexico on 11/11/11 to visit Hector and some of his peers at a Day Care center in Tecate where he goes daily and through which we sponsor him. In the process, we played with him, loved on him, put a name to a real face with some of our students and Hector, and we brought he and his family some food & household basics:  rice, beans, flour, sugar, potatoes, avocados, salsa, salt, oil, pots/pans, dish soap, and laundry detergent.   In the process, we found out that Hector's Dad whom I've met before recently left his mom for another woman and kicked Hector's mom and he and his siblings out of the house.  They are now living full time at the daycare center.  Words cannot describe how huge an impact this partnership is having with our students and Hector's family.  Maybe these pictures might help.

WE ALSO HELD A "NO MEAL, ONE DAY" FASTING AND WORSHIP NIGHT.

We partnered with One Meal, One Day - an event that Compassion International puts on and we invited our students to skip a meal (or all their meals for a day) and bring the money they would have spent on food that day to youth group for a worship event so we could sponsor the poor around the world.

The result?   Students fasted and prayed and gave $354 toward the Famine in the Horn of Africa and pledged enough money each week for us to add another child to our sponsor list.   I'm so excited to introduce our students to a girl from Thailand that we now sponsor through Compassion International.   Her name is Keke.  May God use our youth ministry to completely transform her life as we partner with Compassion.

Here's some pictures to tell this new story.

Dream and prat

I honestly feel like our MO going into 2012 is getting people into the presence of God. That’s where dreams are conceived and problems are solved. That is where miracles happen. That is where we are transformed. That is wherethe will of God is revealed. The primary mechanism? Prayer and worship. We need to pray and worship more strategically. We need to pray and worship with more faith. We need to pray and worship personally and corporately. http://www.markbatterson.com/

Disciple Now Curriculum - Gender Sensitivity

There has been a current trend in Disciple Now curriculum where people will write research which can be particularly targeted towards one gender or another. Many instances these research correspond with one another. For instance, one creator would possibly write a study about purity and write both a version for women and a model for guys. This is nice as a result of in case you did not comprehend it, boy and girls are different and I'm not even talking about an anatomy lesson here. Girls and boys face totally different issues. Boys and girls take care of their emotions in another way from one another. Many occasions boy and girls often have different goals for life as well. Because of these elements and many more gender particular research are a great factor however they aren't at all times the best option nor are they all the time an option at all. Therefore you as a instructor have to concentrate on the variations in the genders and put together and share accordingly. In this article I want to talk about how you can go about being gender sensitive in your instructing so to reach your college students in the best way possible.

1.Know the culture - Times are always altering and our culture continues to change. It's good to keep up with what is occurring and sustain with present research about developments among students. This may provide help to better perceive what is happening round you and provide help to train effectively.

2.Know your college students - All of the research on the earth about completely different genders and lives of teenagers are meaningless except you know your students. Relationships are what it's all about and one of the best Disciple Now curriculum on this planet will likely be meaningless with out them. They're particularly essential though on the subject of gender sensitivity. You have to know there hurts and needs. You need to notice that every scholar is exclusive and while studies give us a guide and a place to begin our college students do not fit some particular mold.

3.Do not make assumptions - This means numerous things. For one you'll be able to never assume that your whole college students are unhealthy nor can you assume that they are all living the best way they're supposed to. Additionally, you possibly can not assume that because they're a certain gender they cannot wrestle with a certain sin. Take pornography for example. For the longest time this was often called a boys solely problem. This is simply not the case now. Now ladies wrestle with this difficulty just as much as guys do if not more at times. So it's important to understand you may get trapped in a box of cultural norms and assume you know what can and cannot happen.

These principles will provide help to as you try to be sensitive to the particular needs and struggles of the 2 genders. If you observe them you can find you possibly can avoid numerous pitfalls and your ministry will be far more highly effective and effective.

New Sermon Series And Some Free Games For You

New Sermon Series:

Turning Point

Week 1 of 4   Pigs and Chains

Here are the points for the first week.

Mark 5:9-13

1.  Jesus seeks to free us from our hopeless condition.

2.  Jesus paid a high price on the cross for us.

3.  We respond to freedom with joy, a changed life, and a desire to tell of what Jesus has done.

Last Thought:

Who do you need to tell about your changed life today?

Download it here:   www.youthministrytoolbox.com

 Or Youth Ministry Resources

Free Games:

Guess Who

Contact all your students’ parents and have them send in a photo of their child as a toddler. This is HUSH HUSH, and their child cannot know the photos are going to be sent in.

(When you start showing the pictures it gets the students all freaked out about which photo their parent might have sent in.)

With all your photos on a bulletin board or scanned in to a slide show, gather your students and show the photos to see who can match the toddler on screen with the teenager across the room.

How’s Yours

This is a really fun game that is also very, very simple to play. You need zero supplies or preparation! Told ya it was simple. Here’s what you do.

Choose one student to go out of the room and way out of ear shot. While that student is gone (with an adult volunteer…just to make sure), you stand in front of the rest of the kids and pick one object (usually a body part or an article of clothing) that everyone has.

Once you have decided upon an object as a group (for instance, nose, big toe, shoes, mouth, car, mom, etc), call for the student who was outside to come back in. When he/she comes in, he/she will go around the room and ask everyone, "How's Yours?"

The other students’ responses need to be one or two words describing that object that was selected. After everyone has had a chance to describe how theirs is, the student who went outside must try and guess what object everyone’s talking about.

Tip: Have the kids use very vague adjectives to describe the object. For example, if your object is your nose, make sure you explain to the kids describing their noses not to use something obvious that will give it away (like runny). They can use words like red, sore, big, narrow, loud, etc.

Our kids love this game! If your group is larger, maybe only have 10-15 kids describe "How's Yours" to keep the game moving and minimize the repeat answers.

I Need A Shoelace

This game can be played with small or huge groups. The up-front person divides teams (in audiences of rallies or other large gatherings you can make each section of chairs a group).

The up-front person then yells out a demand for a somewhat common item that people might have on them. The first team to bring up that item wins that round. Have each team elect ONE runner to run the item up to the person up front.

Examples:
I need a...
shoelace
student body card
13 shoes tied together
3 belts hooked together
nail file
chewed gum
someone with food in their teeth
sock with a hole in it
movie stub ticket
Driver's Liscense
quarter older than 1999
hair brush

Youth Ministry Resources - How To Choose The Right Resources

One of the hardest things to do as a youth pastor is sifting through all of the youth ministry resources that are available. So many people are providing materials to help you reach your students that it can be hard to know where to begin. Here are a few steps to help you avoid many of the mistakes and that people make in this part of their ministry.

  1. Do not reinvent the wheel- Many ministers, do to pride or bad advice, feel that they have to create all of their own curriculum, studies, sermons, games, etc. But with all of the wonderful youth ministry resources available, why would you devote your time to creating your own? Your job is to build relationships with your students, not create sermons, games, etc. Focus on the relationships. They are what will lead to genuine change in your student's lives.
  2. Look for value- Your budget is probably limited. Even if it is not, you must be wise with the funds that you are entrusted with. Look for materials that bring a lot of value. Maybe you can use them more than once. Perhaps you can buy them in a bundle. One of the best values is to look for a subscription. Subscriptions for youth ministry resources will allow you to get plenty of materials for one low annual price. Many of these sites also have weekly or monthly updates so that you always have fresh materials to work with. You cannot beat a deal like that.
  3. Digital is dynamite- Sorry; I had to be a little cheesy. What I mean though is find materials that you can download digitally, straight from the Internet. It is quick and convenient. Digital also makes it easier to store and organize your materials for later use. We live in a digital world, why not take advantage of the benefits it can bring.

I know these are only a few steps but they were a great starting point for me. I hope they will be for you also as you look for the right youth ministry resources for your ministry.

Youth Group Games - Banana Split Feet

Here is a great idea for Youth Group Games

Banana Split Feet

I just love ice cream games for summer…don’t you? This is one that will cool you off and gross you out all at the same time. Here’s what you do.

Bring three boys and three girls up front and pair each boy with a girl. Now, set several tubs of ice cream and condiments in front of the girls that they will use to make a Banana Split. Make sure to include three flavors of ice cream, bananas, chocolate syrup, nuts, whip cream, and of course, some cherries.

Tell the crowd that the girls are going to make a banana split for their boy partner to eat, and the first team to successfully make and eat the banana split wins.

Here’s the catch. (Isn’t there always a catch?)

The girls have to make their partners’ banana splits using their bare feet! After the girls have taken off their socks and shoes, give them a countdown. The first team with every flavor of ice cream and condiment in the bowl…and then in the guy’s stomach, wins!

NOTE: Make sure the ice cream is fairly soft, else the game will flop because the girls won’t be able to get it out with their feet.

Deciding Which Resources You Need For Your Youth Ministry!

Choosing youth ministry resources can quickly become a jungle for youth pastors to struggle through. Simply deciding which materials you need can be extremely difficult. Maybe you are a new youth pastor who already feels like they are just trying to tread water. Maybe you are a veteran who is looking for some new ideas. Either way, I hope these simple steps can help you as you search for the proper materials for your students.

  1. Games- Honestly, I am like most student pastors. I go back and for on the importance or value of games. But recently I have been reminded of how games can help to build the much-needed community your students need. So any library of youth ministry resources should have a few games. PowerPoint games are a great way to start and super easy to use. Not to mention clean.
  2. Sermons- You probably have a service at some point in the week just for students. You need something to teach them. You may write your own sermons, and that is great. But why not use someone else's stuff? It does not make you less of a minister. It makes you a wise one. You only have so many hours in a day. Why not use your time on more valuable aspects of your ministry like hanging out with your students.
  3. Administrative materials- This often gets left out of the conversation when we think of youth ministry resources. But these materials are extremely important. The more organized we can be the more efficient we can be with our time. The more we can focus on things that we enjoy, things that are eternal. And again, why spend your time creating your own materials? There are plenty available online and many of them are free.

Well, those are my few thoughts. I hope they bring a little guidance as you continue to minister to your students.  For more great youth ministry resources check out http://www.youthministrytoolbox.com or click Youth Ministry Resources

Coaching for Pastors - Getting the Job Done With Excellence

There are many reasons as to why a church may want to provide coaching for pastors on their staff. When you utilize a pastoral coaching company, you will find that by having a personal coach walk through steps and strategies with your pastor, the needs of your church body will be better met and you will see an abundance of healthy growth among your staff as well as your congregation. There are a few areas that you will need your pastor to look at in order to determine if this is the right step for the growth of your church.

First of all, when you are looking into implementing coaching for pastors, it is important to take a look at exactly how they feel about the church as a whole. This means sitting down and answering tough questions such as is the church reaching its full potential and, if not, how can this be done effectively? Or, is the pastor spending too much time dealing with issues among the congregation and not having the time to properly lead? Another question may be how to equip leaders to be effective in their ministry? You may even be wondering how to get your congregation to become more involved in the ministry of the church. Once you know how you or the pastor feels, you can then determine how to make the changes needed.

Some changes that many churches across America and even throughout the world need to make are quite simple yet take some strategic planning on the pastor's part. When it comes to coaching for pastors, this is where the help really comes in to play. You will be able to put into words the vision for the church and find out ways to clearly tell the congregation about it as well as get them excited to be a part of it. When the pastor and pastors on staff are motivated to lead, those who are volunteers in ministry should see the vision and be equipped to lead as well. When people are active in ministry and feel a part, they will be more prone to give financially which will help provide resources to all ministries.

With coaching for pastors, the process will be clear and change will take place. You will be able to see your church grow numerically as well as spiritually. Your ministry teams will be effective and everything will be done with true excellence.  For More Info About Coaching For Pastors Check Out http://www.ministryadvantage.org/

Adult Bible Study Curriculum - Relationships Article Source

When it comes to teaching a bible study, most of us teachers merely worry about how well we communicate the adult bible study curriculum. We usually believe that this is what will decide whether or not we are successful. While this does play an important part in whether a group is growing and thriving or not, it does not even rank near the top of the list. Before we even utter our first word, our main priority should be building relationships with the people we will be teaching.

Building relationships first gives us so many wonderful benefits. There is of course the natural benefit of just getting to know someone new. God has called us to love people and build relationships with each other. We are to live in community with others the best we can. Not only did Jesus teach this but he also modeled it. Then his disciples and the early church followed that example. Relationships are at the foundation of who we are supposed to be. But beyond that it makes our communication of the adult bible study curriculum that much more effective. If you think back to the classes you have been a part of, be it at church or at school, I can almost guarantee that if you were honest you would say that the greatest experiences of learning and growth that you had came from the teachers who made a connection with you and had a more personal investment in you. It is like the old saying, "people do not care how much you know until they know how much you care." You are going to be talking about deep issues possibly and in order for those lessons to be effective people must feel like they are in a safe environment. They must feel a certain level of trust with you before they will get involved in discussion. This should not shock us. We are usually the same way. We are closed off at first but steadily open up as we gain a comfort level with others. Why would we expect anything different from someone else.

I love teaching. I get excited every time I get a new opportunity to communicate a lesson from the adult bible study curriculum we are studying. But in my years of experience I have found that my knowledge and excitement mean nothing until I build relationships with those whom I will be teaching.

Youth Ministry Resources - Finding Great Resource

We live in a world with a lot of Youth Ministry Resources. Every time you turn around there is a new shelf, a new book, or a new site for youth ministry. How do you select your ideas for your ministry? Should you make your own resources? So many questions. Let's see if we can find a few answers.

First off, do not be afraid to buy someone stuff. I know a lot of us take pride in creating our own material. But you have a lot of things on your plate, so why reinvent the wheel. Using someone ideas does not make you a bad student pastor. In fact it may make you a better one. If you are not spending all your time creating, you can devote more time to relationships with your students.

If you do create your own save them. Be organized so you can build a library. This way you can help others in need of ideas, and reuse own material as you do new events and get new groups of students.

Look for subscriptions to youth ministry resources. There are many great websites that offer some incredible deals. The great thing about subscription sites for student ministries is that there are usually weekly updates. This way you are constantly getting fresh ideas and you never have to stress about finding material again. If nothing else, if you are caught in a busy week before camp or disciple now, you never have to get caught without having a great talk or small group prepared for the week.

There are a lot of youth ministry resources, so there are also a lot of tips and strategies on finding and creating youth ministry resources. I think these are enough tips and strategies to get us started.

Jamie Starrett is a student pastor that enjoys helping others find resources that can help them do ministry. He has been a student pastor for 14 years at the same church and loves what he does.

Great post by Parry noble

Some thoughts...do I care more about who my leaders are becoming or what they can do got out ministry

Five Core Values Of A Church In DeclineMay 11, 2011

#1 – Laziness - Most people/churches are not “stuck” or in decline because they do not know or understand what the Lord wants them to do…God speaks very clearly in His Word and through His Spirit.  It’s just that God’s work always requires people to take a step of faith!  Remember, God promised the Israelites the “Promised Land,” but they actually had to go in and fight the battles.  A church that refuses to do whatever it takes and embraces laziness will eventually settle in the desert until that generation dies off.

#2 – Fear of Man – God has called His people to set the world on fire; unfortunately, too many church leaders today waste their time trying to put fires out and make people happy!  Scripture pretty much sums it up inProverbs 29:25!  If your first question is always, “what does our biggest giver want” and “not what does God want” you church is stepping into the casket!

#3 – Pride – When a church and/or it’s leaders are not willing to admit a mistake OR that a method that used to work just doesn’t work anymore…it’s over.

#4 – Staff Abuse – This is something I’ve written about a lot lately…but I will say it over and over again, when a leader cares more about what his staff does than who they are becoming then he will begin to push them to put in 70-80 weeks on a consistant basis…and when they begin to show signs of being pushed too hard he will accues them of being “disloyal” or “not bought in enough to make things happen.”  When a leader begins to do this (and other “leaders” sit by passively and watch it happen) then the quality of staff members the church is about to attract and keep will decrease significantly.

(One note on this…many times a pastor/leader who leads like this is lazy!  They often wait until the last minute to do things and then expect the entire staff to change and rearrange everything they are doing to accomodate his lack of planning.  Changes DO happen in ministry, heck, we had to switch up our entire Easter services at the last minute.  BUT…this should be the exception and NOT the norm.  AND…when it really is the exception the staff will always respond with passion and excitement because there is a consistant track record of loyalty TOWARDS them!)

#5 – Loss of Focus – When a pastor/leader (or group of leaders) become more obsessed with their “ministry platform” and begin to dive into other “ministry opportunities” and do so with such frequency that they cease to love the people that Jesus has called them to minister to…disaster is right around the corner because the church will become nothing more than a resource for the pastor to promote himself rather than a group of people whom God has brought together and given him responsibility over to love and lead.

Girls Ministry Ideas - Where Do I Look?

Many of us know that we are in need of girls ministry ideas. Many of us also know that we do not have the time to come up with all of them on our own. Thankfully we do not have to come up with them all on our own. We should allow God to speak to us and use the creativity He has given to us, but there are a lot of great ideas that are already available and planned out for us. We only need to figure out where to look for them. In this article I want to show you the key places you need to look to find all the information you need to make your ministry powerful and effective.

The first place you should look is the Internet. Since you are reading this article I have a feeling you already know this. The Internet is a wonderful resource for girls ministry ideas and many of them are very affordable or even free. Plus, you can come back and view or download them as often as you need to.

Next you need to go to your local bookstore. There are a lot of books and resources specifically devoted to this topic. People have used their experience and talents to put them on paper in an organized fashion and taking advantage of these resources can save you a lot of time and headaches.

Finally, when looking for girls ministry ideas, you need to talk to those around you. Talk to people in your church. You could talk to people you met at school or have connected with at conferences. Go to discussion forums. You could even talk to other ministers in your community. Regardless of who you talk to the people around you can be an invaluable resource and most of them will be more than willing to share what they know and what they have. Just like what we have talked about before, this can save you time, headaches, and money. The other bonus is that even if they do not have what you need they can more than likely direct you to where you need to look.

Coming up with ideas for how to reach out to the girls in your ministry can be difficult. Fortunately you do not have to come up with them all on your own. Hopefully the information in this article will give you a better idea of where you need to look so that you are not doing all of the work yourself and so you are not spending all of your time finding and creating resources.
